There are many people who are solid believers and servants of Jesus Christ who feel alone. They may be surrounded by family and friends but there is a distinct kind of loneliness. It is different than just being alone. It is something felt in the depths of their spirit. Even getting around others makes it worse. It only serves to intensify it.
David said one day, "I watch and am alone like a sparrow upon the roof of the house." That man was a great King, surrounded constantly by people and at times his enemies. There is a kind of feeling alone that opens something up within us that causes us to want nothing and no one else but the Lord. That kind of aloneness has a work that is personal between God and that person. No one can enter into it. It is rather holy and sacred.
After awhile a powerful feeling enters in that makes that person want to stand up and go after God. They push past everything to get to Him. Their entire being becomes filled up with a determination that is greater than themselves that makes them rise up and meet Him. And no one and nothing can stop them.
Something happens that creates a sharpness in that person that makes them stand up and own their own walk. They are changed by it. Once they have taken that stand, they go on to stand for what and whom they believe in for the rest of their lives. There is great power and freedom in that kind of person. They stand out amongst the rest, like Saul "who stood head and shoulders above his brethren."
The lonely watchmen are like those sparrows who make their perch in the eaves of the temple where prayer is made. They perch alone, and that is where the valiant one's watch and live. It is painful in many ways, yes, but those that live like this in the end would never have it any other way, all would be lost. They live to watch and pray, and serve the Lord in this call.
"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." ~King David - Psalm 23:4
