In this video, we speak with Costs of War Project Director Dr. Stephanie Savell. Dr. Savell is one of several scholars researching the costs of the post-9/11 wars at the Watson Institute of International and Public Affairs at Brown University. Dr. Savell weighs in on US President Joe Biden’s announcement of withdrawal from Afghanistan and whether or not the United States has fully acknowledged the costs of war.

Stephanie Savell is an anthropologist of militarism, security, and civic engagement and has studied these topics in the United States and in Brazil. She researches and writes about the United States's post-9/11 wars and on militarized policing in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas. Savell has published in PoLAR: Political and Legal Anthropology Review, Focaal: Journal of Global and Historical Anthropology, The Guardian, the Smithsonian magazine, Axios, and The Nation, among others, and is co-author of The Civic Imagination: Making a Difference in American Political Life (Routledge, 2014). She earned her PhD from Brown University.
