Walking in God’s Ways When we study the future, as pictured by the Feast of Tabernacles, we come to understand more about God’s ways. The prophets, Isaiah and Micah, both were inspired to write about the coming of the Messianic age. Their messages were very similar, and they both focused on the importance of the law in establishing the millennial reign of the Messiah. So what are those ways of God that he will be teaching all nations?

In Genesis, the Lord God set the heavenly bodies into motion for “appointed times” and seasons. What were these appointed times and why and how was their observance repudiated by “traditional Christianity”? Does God still expect his people, those who walk with Him, to observe the Feasts of the Lord, His mo’ed, appointed times, today?

Turmoil and terror reigned this week in Nice, France, when a terrorist killed dozens on a major thoroughfare. Death and such flagrant disregard for life, is the result of lawlessness. Christians on the other hand are called to be different, to choose life, yet statistically speaking, Christians can fall prey to many of the life-destroying practices that are common in secular society. It is perhaps a good time to re-evaluate the role of the Law of God in our lives, and consider some basic principles that should guide every Christian. Let’s do a close examination of the Hebrew and Greek scriptures to answer some fundamental questions?

Christians are called to a holy calling to lead lives worthy of our master, Jesus, the Messiah. We have been given the gracious gift of forgiveness, so we may become a holy people. God extends his grace, “charis,” his favour and blessings, to his people. But then what? Many people in thinking correctly that we do not earn salvation by keeping the law, then make the false assumption that the law is no longer necessary, or valid. Nothing could be further from the truth of scripture! We are called to live holy lives, lives dedicated to our master. We are to walk humbly with God, in faith and gratitude for God’s gracious gifts. The Freedom from Slavery To call ourselves “Christians,” followers of Christ, is to acknowledge that he is the “Master.” His thoughts, attitudes, and actions are ones we want to emulate. When you understand who Jesus was before his life as a human, you can easily see why the law of Moses played a vital role in Jesus’ teaching. Just as he saved Israel from Egyptian slavery, so we too have been saved. Saved to live in obedience to him. So, what was the value of the law of Moses from Jesus’ point of view? And do we value these teachings as our Master does? Law of Moses — Love Your Neighbour In our secular society the question is, “Does the Bible have any place in your life?” And as Christians we might answer a resounding, “Yes.” However, ask many Christians, “Does the law of Moses have any place in your life?” and you might get a different answer. Both Paul and Peter warned of false teachers who would deny their master, Jesus Christ. Using clever arguments they would deceive people while promising them freedom from the law. And this is the reality in many Christian churches. Yet, doesn’t Christ himself say we are to live by every word of God? Law of Moses for Christians: The History Most Christians today believe the Law of Moses has little validity in the modern world. They do not understand the history of this belief, nor do they realize the factors that led mainstream Christian thought to repudiate the Law of Moses for Christians. They have not questioned their belief, nor considered the impact of this belief on their behaviour and the resulting consequences. Is the Law of Moses “done away.” The majority report from traditional Christianity would say a resounding, “Yes!” But what do the scriptures say? Defining Covetousness The tenth commandment — avoiding covetousness — is perhaps the most challenging of God’s divine directives. God is very concerned about what we think, as thought often leads to action. Covetous thoughts, those keen, overwhelming, selfish desires must be overcome. The scripture contrasts the passionate fleshly lusts and urges against the passionate godly desires. But how can we know whether our passions are good or bad? It is only through a thorough understanding of God’s law that we can understand is will. Those caught up in covetousness are those guilty of ‘anomia,’ lawlessness. Jesus warned of false prophets and false Christs, Paul warned of false ministers and false brethren, and Peter warned of false teachers. They all were guilty of bearing false witness, and of refusing to honour God by obeying his divine directive. Paul knew that the only way to avoid falling prey to the deceptive words of the religious charlatans was to have a love for the truth. So the question for us is, “Do we love the truth. seek the truth, and speak or write the truth?” But we must also consider whether we truly hate lies, and whether we refuse to listen to or support the liars. The Eighth commandment, Lo T'ganav literally means, "NO you steal!" This is God's instruction for combatting theft and deception. It is sometimes easy to ignore our complicity in this problem. We can perhaps quickly say that we are not pirates, burglars, robbers, or thieves. But then, perhaps we are not truly grasping the full implications of this command. This teaching underscores a deep systemic problem in society that has been a part of humanity for millennia. Paul characterized it as the 'carnal' attitude, that was opposed to God's will and would ultimately end in death. The way of thieves was one of deception, as their intent was to gain through stealth what was not rightfully theirs. So do we follow this way or support it by our actions or attitudes? Why is this Happening? Modern Questions and Ancient Answers Is there a Sabbath connection to our present dilemmas? It is evident that we, the people of the West, are standing at a crossroads.
