Steven Gan incident
16
Hello, this is detective Masaji. Today I will tell you about an example of how the Yakuza controls the free market in Japan. Mr. Steven Gan, author of “Making it and Breaking it in Japan” was an owner of a debt collection agency in Japan. The Yakuza monopolizes this kind of business so one day, a Yakuza threatened Mr. Steven Gan telling him in no uncertain terms that if he entered his territory, he would kill him. Some time after this, Mr. Steven Gan was arrested because of a vengeful group of lawyers had him arrested on a technicality. I can’t help but think there was a connection. When Yakuza think killing you is too messy, they will bring out their lawyers to bury you.
