Why We Started a Farm – Name Explained

When we started our homestead journey the two most common questions we were asked were: what made y’all want to start farming, and what does “GWP” mean? Put simply, it’s a way to honor the past and bring our family closer together.

GWP stands for Grimes Wildlife Preserve. This homemade street sign sat on a post at my parent’s house for many, many years. We didn’t have a “wildlife preserve” in the vein of the Irwin family, per se, but we had chickens, Dad kept a big garden and Mom worked hard canning vegetables and making jelly every fall, and a couple boys could run, play, build clubhouses and catch fish out of the pond. When we had to sell that place and move the sign came with me (there was no chance I was leaving it behind).

I guess I’ve always carried that desire with me, to have my own piece of ground where I could raise critters and kids. With no real place to show it off the sign sat in obscurity for a few years. Since we bought our farm last spring I’ve been waiting for the chance to hang it and I finally found the perfect place. I made this simple frame from scrap 2x4s and now it’s displayed proudly. Welcome home.

My wife Megan supports all this; heck she probably drives this bus more than I do. It was a childhood dream of hers to have a farm. Now we raise a garden, chickens, goats, and our own beef. God blessed us with an opportunity to purchase this little plot of land, and we want our kids to appreciate where food comes from and learn how to be good stewards of His creation. There’s no telling what we might try to do in the future or what animals might get added to the herd. We’ll just keep taking each day one at a time.
