The Gospel of Nicodemus and the Harrowing of Hell

What a scene that must have been…to see our dearest Lord invade and conquer the underworld, conquering death and humiliating Satan and the demons in the process. A possible account or narrative of this event is provided in an ancient piece of literature known as the Gospel of Nicodemus.The Gospel of Nicodemus (also referred to as The Acts of Pilate) is a piece of literature from the early days of the Church.The Gospel of Nicodemuscontains two parts: the first, often called The Acts of Pilate, deals with Jesus’ passion and death; and the second part deals with Jesus’ descent into hell after His death. Although it is not an inspired Gospel like that of Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John, it is still an influential writing that certainly expresses the belief of the apostles and disciples.The Gospel of Nicodemuswas a well-known text especially in the Middle Ages. Medieval ideas such as the Harrowing of Hell…that is the teaching that, between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, Jesus went to Hades, broke down its gates, and delivered the righteous from captivity…are largely drawn from the Gospel of Nicodemus.
