What does it mean for Jesus to be Messiah - Christ?

What does it mean for Jesus to be the Messiah or Christ and what are its implications? What does the Bible teach on the topic and what should Christians believe?

Bible Verses
- The term was first coined by the mother of Samuel, Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:10.
- From 1 Samuel to 2 Chronicles the term “anointed one” refers 42 times to a king, once to a ruling prophet before there were kings in Israel and once to Zadok, the king’s high priest who had to take spiritual leadership. (see 1 Sam 2:10, 25; 10:1; 12:3, 5; 15:17, 16:6, 13)
- The Psalms and the prophets continued using this term “Messiah” to refer to the king of Israel (Ps. 2:2; 18:50; 20:6; 28:8; 45:7; 89:20, 38, 61; 105:15 (ruling prophets); 132:10, 17; Is. 61:1.)
- In the NT Jesus is called “Christ” all over (see Mat. 1:1) which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word “Messiah”. Thus Jesus is declared to be the ultimate King of Kings.
- Jesus received His anointing in Matthew 3:16 when He was baptised by the prophet John the Baptist. Jesus was however not anointed with oil, but by the Spirit Himself who came to rest on Him as Isaiah 61:1 prophesied. (see Is. 61:1; Acts. 10:38).

What are the implication of Jesus to be the Messiah
● In order to do this we will look at what the OT says about the Messiah.
a. He will be a “son of David” (2 Sam. 7)
b. He will be a “son of God” (Ps. 2)
c. He will be a “son of man” (Dan. 7)
d. He will be God’s “Servant” (Is. 53)
e. He will be wise (Is. 11)
f. He will rule (Is. 42)

i. He will bring salvation (Is. 53)
j. It becomes clear that He is the Emmanuel of Isaiah 7:14

l. It becomes clear that He is the seed of Genesis 3:15
