2S22 Bohdana - Ukraine's Own Self-Propelled Artillery

The 2S22 Bohdana is Ukraine's indigenous self-propelled artillery gun. Only one was made before the Ukraine War broke out.

A little video I thought I would do. So, over the past few weeks we have seen a number of artillery pieces sent to Ukraine---the Panzer Hau Bit zer, the Dana, the CAESAR as well as towed howitzers such as the M777.

But what about Ukraine’s own indigenous produced self-propelled howitzer? Well, they have one – the 2S33 Bohdana. Now, when I say they have one—I mean that literally. This is a very new vehicle and only one is operational. At the time the war started, it hadn’t even been officially incorporated into the armed forces.

It was made in the Kramatorsk Heavy Machinery Plant in the Donbas Region. Officials at the plant actually planned to destroy the Bohdana so it wouldn’t fall in Russian hands. However, as the Russian advance faltered, the risk of capture declined and it was instead deployed to the army. In May, video was shown of the Bohdana firing.

So, just what is the Bohdana? It’s a 155mm gun mounted on a 6x6 Kraz truck. So it uses the same calibre rounds as the CAESAR and Panzer Hau Bitze. So how does it compare to those artillery pieces? Well, it definitely holds it own.

Well the Bohdana has a rate of fire of 4 to 8 rounds per minute.

The CAESAR 6 rounds per minute

When it comes to range, the Bohdana has an range of 35 to 40 km with regular rounds and 45 to 60 km with rocket assisted rounds.

The Panzerhaubiteze has an effecitve range that varies depending on ammunition, but it is 30 to 47 km for non rocket assisted rounds, and then 67 km with a rocket assisted round.

CAESAR has an effective range of just over 40 km.

So the Bohdana can definitely hold its own and is comparable in rate of fire and firing range to the other more well known artillery pieces. Unfortunately, there is just one in the field. But that one has quite an interesting story to it.
