Convicted felon arrested when APD officers finds an illegal modified gun

On 4/27/22, Officers with the Zone 6 Crime Suppression Unit conducted a traffic stop on vehicle with no registration at the location of Manigault St SE and Walthall ST SE. Once the vehicle, was stopped, officers explained the reason of the stop to the driver and passenger and requested a valid driver’s license. The driver did not have a valid license on his person.

While speaking with the driver, officers smelled the odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle. With probable cause established, officers asked the occupants to exit the vehicle as they conducted a lawful search. While speaking with the driver, officers observed marijuana on his person and detained him.

During the lawful search, officers recovered suspected Oxycodone, codeine, an automatic Glock 21 located in the driver’s seat, a black ski mask, cell phone, and suspected marijuana from the vehicle.

Officers identified the driver as Pontius Thomas. Mr. Thomas was confirmed to be a convicted felon-Conviction date, 7/9/09 out of Dekalb County. Mr. Thomas was arrested and charged with: No Tag Decal, Discharge for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Phenylpro, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm of a Convicted Felon, Giving False Name to Police, No Driver’s License. Mr. Thomas’s vehicle was impounded due to having no tag or valid registration.

Mr. Thomas was transported to the Fulton County Jail without Incident. We would like to commend the Zone 6 Crime Suppression Unit for their great investigative work in removing another dangerous felon in the possession of a firearm from the streets and keeping our citizens safe.
