The Fez by Steely Dan ~ The Penitent Man of God

The Fez is the most simple, straightforward song that Steely Dan ever wrote, and as such, no one within the Mainstream knows what to make of it...the theories posited about "The Fez" over the years, are nothing short of riotous, as no one wants to quietly and calmly OBSERVE what is simply being said in this song, or do the work to find out the origins to the Fez...its Symbolism and Purpose...

The Fez has two verses and a one line "Chorus" that are essentially sung three times within the song...the Chords are few, as are the Changes, which makes this a VERY unusual and SIMPLE Steely Dan song...and why??? Because the message is both Powerful and Simple, that the Narrator in the song does NOT want to go thru Life, any more, without his
"Fez" on...and the Fez is both Allegorical, but Literal as well...meaning that he wishes to stay upon this Penitent Path before God that is Strait and Narrow, so that he can become God's HOLY MAN...as this is what the Simple, Unadorned Fez represents...a Simple statement that the wearer is a Man of God, in Service to the Father's Creation...

Simple, Beautiful, Touching and Loving...all from Donald Fagen and Walter Becker...who would have thunk it??? Perhaps, Only Me!
