Transplanting an Oak Tree from my Ancestral Home
One day this little oak sapling will be a great shade tree in our backyard and I’m sure many memories will be made in its presence. This tree is special to me because I transplanted it from my grandmother’s family farm about 45 miles from our home. The property was logged 7 years ago and now there are young oak saplings scattered everywhere, and because I wanted to add a few quality trees near the house I was able to put in a little work and move this young tree to our farm.
My plan was to transplant three trees, but when I started digging I realized I bit off more than what I wanted to chew, and when my shovel broke I took that as I sign that one tree was enough. Since I’ve already prepped for two more trees we’ll go ahead and buy those – those will be purchased from our family who runs a nursery, and because we’re buying we can get whatever we want. If you’ve been following our channel for very long you’ve heard me complain about the number of low-quality trees around our farm. To this point we’ve removed several undesirable (at least to us) trees near the house and now we are replacing those with tree species that we want – I’m partial to oaks, and there are a few black walnuts, maples, and persimmon trees elsewhere.

The best time to transplant trees is during the winter when the tree is dormant. This is early March so I’ve only got another few weeks here in Kentucky before the trees start to leaf out and we move into the warmest part of the year. I worked hard to procure this tree and I want it to survive, so this is the opportune moment to act.
