Why is Social Security Disability Concerned about My Education Level?!

Why does your level of education make any difference to Social Security when they evaluation your claim for disability benefits?

As I discuss in this video, Social Security assumes that if you have more education there are more categories of jobs that you might be able to perform. For example, a 45 year old man with chronic low back pain who does not have a high school diploma would find it all but impossible to even interview with an employer looking for an in house bookkeeper, or an employer looking for a sales supervisor.

By contrast a similar disability applicant who has a college degree would have dozens more job opportunities simply because educational levels are a qualification for many types of jobs.

Does this mean that a college graduate or a person with an advanced post graduate degree can never win disability benefits from Social Security? Not at all. Certain medical impairments like severe congestive heart failure or end stage liver disease would likely result in a finding of disabled regardless of how educated a person might be.

Further, medication side effects, unsuccessful surgeries or severe mental health issues can make work impossible for everyone regardless of education.

So it is more accurate to say that a more limited education can make it easier for a person to win benefits than it would to say that an extensive education makes it more difficult.

Social Security’s grid rules - see https://gridrules.net - reflect SSA’s recognition that fewer jobs actually exist for less educated claimants and thus leave such a person without a realistic shot of employment. And SSA equates the absence of employment opportunities with the disability process.
