Download Your "Social Security Statement" Prior to Filing for Disability

Why should your download your "MySocialSecurity" statement before your filed for disability benefits?

I advise all of my clients and potential clients to visit ssa.gov/myaccount to register for and download this free document from SSA which will provide useful information we can use when filing for #SSDI benefits.

As I discuss in this video, your #MySocialSecurity statement will tell us:

- if you are insured (qualified) for SSDI disability, or are you limited to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) only. SSI is a much less robust program and due to Social Security's outdated rules, your monthly check may be reduced or eliminated if you receive financial help from friends or relatives

- how much you will receive each month. This can help you plan for your post-working life

- have all of your work credits posted - you may be able to fix mistakes and omissions that can affect your payment amount

You definitely want to avoid a situation where you start the #disabilityapplication process only to learn later than you are one or two credits short to qualify for SSDI.

Finally, when you actually apply for disability benefits, you'll be able to track the progress of your case at your MySocialSecurity account.
