Legacy Conversations - SADF Intro

The South African Defence Force has a proud record forged in battle. In Africa, nothing comes close. In the Korean War, the Commanding Officer of the USAF 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing issued an order: “In memory of our gallant South African comrades, it is hereby established, as a new policy that at all Retreat Ceremonies held by this Wing, the playing of our National Anthem shall be preceded by playing the introductory bars of the South African National Anthem, 'Die Stem van Suid-Afrika'. All personnel of this Wing will render the same honours to this Anthem as our own.” That was to honour 2 Squadron, South African Air Force.
Since then, the South African Defence Force succeeded in every operation and won every engagement fighting against overwhelming odds. It may be said that it stopped Soviet Expansionism in Sub Saharan Africa. It was rightly feared. In this series, we have a unique opportunity to talk to some of these soldiers, to explore their minds, to understand their thinking and touch on operational issues as far as is legally possible. Everyone interviewed here has served with honour. Where possible the interviews will be in English to reach a wider audience. It is time to expel the myths…
