Blue ice on frozen lake Huron Feb 12, 2021

For the first time in many years blue ice has appeared on the shoreline of Lake Huron.
The ice is formed by selective absorption by water and ice in the red/yellow part of the color spectrum, which causes the light reflected by it to appear blue.
Another reason ice may appear blue is a lack of bubbles and other inclusions inside the ice, which can allow light to further penetrate it, absorbing more of the longer wavelengths, or colors. This leaves shorter wavelength blue light to reflect or pass through the ice, which can make it look blue.
