Em 1859 Charles Gounod compôs a canção ‘Ave Maria’ para dedicar a sua namorada, inicialmente em cima da harmonia composta cerca de 137 anos antes por Johann Sebastian Bach, nomeada por “Meditação”.
A harmonia de Bach é a textura do prelúdio nº 1 em Dó Maior do livro I de O Cravo Bem Temperado. Gounod adicionou um compasso de modo a suavizar a mudança rápida da harmonia do prelúdio. Curiosamente, Bach foi um dos principais compositores protestantes da história.
Existem diferentes arranjos instrumentais, entre eles, para violino e violão, quarteto de cordas, piano solo, violoncelo, cavaquinho e até trombone. Essa versão da música já foi gravada por grandes nomes da música mundial, como Maria Callas, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli e Karen Carpenter e de Luciano Pavarotti.

In 1859 Charles Gounod composed the song 'Ave Maria' to dedicate his girlfriend, initially on top of the harmony composed about 137 years before by Johann Sebastian Bach, named "Meditation".
Bach's harmony is the texture of the prelude nº 1 in C Major from book I of The Well Tempered Harpsichord. Gounod added a compass in order to soften the rapid change of the prelude's harmony. Curiously, Bach was one of the main Protestant composers in history.
There are different instrumental arrangements, among them, for violin and guitar, string quartet, piano solo, cello, ukulele and even trombone. This version of the music has been recorded by great names of world music, such as Maria Callas, José Carreras, Andrea Bocelli and Karen Carpenter and Luciano Pavarotti.
