Xbox Live Gold Controversy and the Course Correction

Microsoft announced yesterday morning that they were raising the price to Xbox Live Gold. Instead of $60 for a one year subscription, they double it to $60 for 6 months!!! Why would they do this? After much backlash from the announcement, they had a course correction and is no longer making this change to Xbox Live Gold.
