BMW’s monster R 18 and new R 18 Classic cruisers got all the headlines last week, but we also saw the announced return of the popular R NineT series for 2021, albeit with only minor upgrades. The models coming back are the standard R NineT, Pure, Scrambler, and the Urban G/S variants, and the subtle changes therein have to do mostly with the 1,170cc roadsters meeting new European emissions standards, but there are a few cosmetic tweaks as well as extensions of standard equipment across the line. BMW is also putting out a limited edition accessory package for the G/S model to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its GS line.

Since the addition of the Urban G/S model in 2017 we haven’t seen huge revisions to this Heritage lineup, and that seems to be the narrative now as well. For starters, the 1,170cc boxer engine has been tuned to be Euro 5 compliant thanks to redesigned cylinder heads that run cleaner, with more efficient combustion. Even better is the fact that those internal revisions only result in the loss of one measly horsepower from the previous bikes (now rated at 109 hp at 7,250 rpm), while peak torque output remains the same at 85.5 pound-feet. And with the cylinder heads being redesigned, naturally BMW has seen fit to give the new R nineTs fresh “aesthetically pleasing” cylinder head covers.

Another welcome tweak is distribution of the electronic rider aids to all bikes across the line—the 2021 R nineT models now see ABS Pro as well as DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) and Rain and Road ride modes as standard equipment. Another target for improvement is the rear suspension, which gets a new shock absorber with travel-dependent damping as well as spring preload adjustment via an external hand wheel. All four models receive updated gauges and now-standard LED lighting as well.

Accessory packages are big money makers, so BMW has naturally extended its range of options and packages for the 2021 R nineTs. The Riding Modes Pro option is all about maximizing engine performance, and it includes the additional Dyna mode for the R nineT and R nineT Pure, and Dirt for the Scrambler and Urban G/S models. The modes allow for better throttle response along with Dynamic Traction Control and MSR (engine drag torque control) to mitigate hard downshifts. Perhaps the biggest news here is the “40 Years GS” special edition of the R nineT Urban G/S, which is a limited edition model with a unique color scheme that references the famous R 100 GS as a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the BMW Motorrad GS family. It’s also fitted with a “40 Years GS” Edition seat in black and yellow, yellow hand protectors, laced wheels with off-road tires, a Scrambler muffler, milled cylinder head covers as well as the Comfort Package

There are also a new Comfort Package option, consisting of Riding Modes Pro, cruise control and heated handlebar grips, and cosmetic options for a sleeker rear muffler and signal design for all models as well. Cruise control is also newly available as a separate option.
