Remove Stevenson from commission: Calahoo Stonehouse
Wednesday’s already heated budget debate took another turn as one of the police commissioners called on Stevenson to be kicked off the commission.
Commissioner Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse said they didn’t realize Houle worked for Stevenson, and raised concerns about his criticism of police.
“I would urge that she’s immediately removed from the police commission and that another city councillor (replaces her) because that is severely a lack of trust from Edmontonians,” she told council. “There is a conflict of interest.”
Police commissions in Alberta are meant to be civilian bodies that provide oversight of police.
McDougall also was concerned Stevenson didn’t disclose that Houle worked for her, telling reporters he is “anti-police, anti-chief McFee, and anti-city council.”
Houle told Postmedia his comments on police were fair and not inflammatory. “I think I was pretty clear that police have a role to play.”
Calahoo Stonehouse’s public call-out, Houle said, was “uncalled for, a little bit unprofessional and definitely lacked decorum.” He said McDougall’s comments were defamatory and “couldn’t be further from the truth.”
According to Stevenson, Houle works for her about 10 hours a month as a strategic adviser for the Indigenous Framework and doesn’t have access to commission business. She also sought Houle’s insight on the Safer for All recommendations for her council work, she said.
“I would never want his employment to prevent him from speaking on these issues. I think he’s an important voice in our community,” she told reporters Wednesday.
