Squid have something in their skin that allow them to change color
Squid have something called “chromatophores” in their skin that allow them to change color and patterns at will. They do this for a slew of reasons- for camouflage, to distract and confuse predators, as a mating strategy, to show aggression or distract prey, IG Clout, and even if they’re just feeling bored (a few of these are my unproven personal theories).
These chromatophores are small sacks in their skin that contain pigment. Specialized muscles can dilate these sacks and make them more or less visible, thus changing their appearance at will. It’s the same sort of thing that octopus, cuttlefish and other land animals have as a tool to survive.
