Break Glass In Case of Broken Glass

We moved to the farm a few months ago now and during the move the glass broke in one of our son’s picture frames. Instead of throwing the frame away and buying a new one I pulled glass from an old window – we collect a lot of junk – cut the glass to the proper size, and placed it in the frame. Good as new!

I’ve cut glass a few times now and it’s still a pretty nerve-wracking experience. You all know glass is very sharp so there’s a chance you can cut yourself pretty bad, but if you mess up your cut there’s no fixing it and you have to start all over. Hopefully you can use your screw-up on a smaller frame somewhere down the road! It did take me two tries to get this break and this one is still far from perfect but the crooked edges are behind the frame and no one will ever know they’re there (well except for you fine folks).

If you’re not familiar with this process, or at least the way I’m doing it, it’s pretty simple and it doesn’t require expensive tools. To “cut” glass you score it with a glass cutting or scoring tool (you can find these for about $5 or less) and then you break it along that score line. Use a straight-edge to keep the score straight, place a round object like a dowel rod under the score, and apply firm pressure to the glass on both sides of the line. It is much easier to break the glass if there is enough material to leverage the glass against itself; you see I struggle to break that small thin piece and I’m very careful to keep my digits away from the sharp parts.

If you decide to give this a try be careful and don’t be disappointed if it’s not perfect, it just has to be good enough that you can hide it!
