Genetic Diseases and Getting Approved for Social Security Disability

Is it possible to win Social Security disability benefits if you are struggling with symptoms associated with Ehlers Danlos syndrome, POTS (posterior orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or a Chiari malformation?

As I discuss in this video, these genetic diseases often appear together and can create significant difficulties in an afflicted claimant's capacity for work.

Neither Ehlers Danlos, POTS nor Chiari malformation are included in Social Security's listings of impairments (although they should, in my opinion). Further, all of the clients I have represented that have these diagnoses are younger than age 50, so the grid rules will not apply.

Therefore, we use a functional capacity argument to explain why an Ehlers Danlos, POTS or Chiari claimant would not be reliable at work.

The joint hypermobility and loss of reflex associated with Ehlers Danlos, the headaches and spinal instability associated with Chiari and the syncope typical of POTS almost always create so many impediments to competitive work that disability judges are very likely to approve - once they fully understand the symptoms.
