Song of the South was ahead of the times when Disney released it in 1946; an Oscar was even awarded to James Baskett. Baskett was the first black person to receive the honor. The film has some subtle racism, but nothing like the racism in films like Gone with the Wind or even Blazing Saddles. Song of the South was a product of the time, and sterotyping was frequent and prevalent, especially in animation.
