The Reason Folks Are Fearful When Discipling Others

Discipling someone is one of the most challenging aspects of a Christian's life. In this Daily Brief, I am going to talk about why it's a problem, what you must do about it, and how we navigate these "discipleship waters" in our ministry.

What we're are doing here with our Mastermind Program goes beyond a Bible study or a ladies group where the fellowship is good, and the study is refreshing, but the challenges are low. Our program is leadership development, which draws out a lot of fear because of the goal in mind, which is discipling others. Usually, fear is always in the mix when thinking about biblically directing someone.

I was one of those fearful people when I started counseling others. It was one thing to go through Bible college, get degrees, talk about God, the Bible, do evangelism, and even think of myself as a disciple-maker.

But it was another matter when I was, sitting in a room across from someone, and I could not hide behind my Bible, become invisible in the men's group study, or do evangelism where I knew that I had an advantage. It was a hurting person asking me for an answer, and there was no lag time from his request and my response.

I could not say, "Great question. Let me do some research and get back with you." No, it was him and me. That was it. There is only one answer to this problem: I had to do it. But that is where the fear comes in and sets up camp in our hearts.

Still, yet, you have to start helping someone.

The crazy good news is that the students in our program have a backup. I did not have someone looking through the one-way glass, watching over my shoulder, or whispering in my ear.
