In order to speak English fluently, you need to learn:
Rhythm
Tone
Inflection
Pauses
These are the parts that are often missing from non-native English speakers. To become fluent in English, you need to work on mastering these 4 parts of speech. Rhythm helps your sentences flow naturally. Tone helps to explain what feeling of the sentence is. Is the sentence happy? Sad? Just a fact. Inflections help the listener know which words are most important in a sentence. Pauses are very important because they emphasize important information in a sentence. Pauses help to prepare the listener for information they need to know.
Today we will look at how important inflections are. Inflections help us know which words are important
Inflections tell the listener when a certain word is important. It also helps the speaker give more emphasis to certain words. We can stress important words.
Just like with Tone, we see how important the way we say something is. This can also work for words. Sometimes a word or words are the most important part of a sentence. So simply, Inflections are Tone but on a specific word.
Let’s look at an example.
The teacher is coming right now.
By adding the Inflection, we changed what the word “teacher” means.
Infections are just like Tone, but for a specific word. They really help show exactly what you mean.
We added the inflection to certain sounds. Did you notice which ones? The louder sounds.
Teacher has 1 really loud sound and another loud sound.
EA is super loud. ER is a hard ending sound.
We went up in tone on the high sound and down on the ending.
Let’s practice some more inflections.
I don’t want to play.
Mike’s girlfriend bought him a gift.
The clowns are the best part.
Now that we have learned all 4 parts to speaking, we can start to look at more sentences and even paragraphs to practice your fluency.
In the beginning, these skills may seem difficult but don’t worry. With practice, you can develop your skill. There is no fast trick to fluency. You can do this, and I will help you.
