Jonah first hated his enemies - and when God Called on Jonah to deliver His Message to his pagan worshiping enemies, Jonah first evaded, then gave curt acknowledgment of God's Glorious messages of redemption and forgiveness.
Yet through Jonah, we see the worst parts of our own character comically magnified, which should generate humility and gratitude that God would love his enemies and put up with 'the Jonah' in each of us. And so, this strange story actually becomes a message of good news about the wideness of God's mercy. It is a story about how God not only loves those who don’t yet know him – but that also how He communicates His message through us – however reluctant we might be in communicating his message.
