Biden and G-7 leaders arrive to G-7 summit in Elmau , GERMANY

The G-7 leaders include Fumio Kishida, prime minister of Japan, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, Charles Michel, president of the European Council, Mario Draghi, prime minister of Italy, Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, Emmanuel Macron, prime minister of France, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Boris Johnson, prime minister of the United Kingdom.

Leaders of the Group of Seven economies met in Germany’s Bavarian Alps on Sunday, looking to show they are united against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine while discussing ways to minimize the war’s effect on rising global food and energy costs.

Scholz said, "Germany and the U.S. will always act together when it comes to questions of Ukraine's security, and we made that clear once more."

In a pre-summit show of force, Russia launched new missile attacks Sunday on Ukraine’s two biggest cities, the capital of Kyiv and Kharkiv, even as the G-7 leaders held talks to determine new ways to isolate Moscow.

Biden announced the G-7 nations would ban new imports of Russian gold, the latest in an array of sanctions Western nations have imposed on Russia in an attempt punish it for Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, now in its fifth month.

As they gathered for a working lunch and a photo of the group, Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joked about how they could look tougher than Putin, who was booted from what once was the G-8 after he seized Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014.

“We’re going to get the bare-chested horseback riding display,” Trudeau quipped, referring to Putin’s frequent displays of himself outdoors — sometimes shirtless, including on horseback.

After the three-day G-7 summit, the world leaders will travel to Madrid for a NATO summit.
