What does a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease mean to your
Social Security disability claim?

As you probably know, degenerative disc disease means that the spongy, cushioning material separating the bony vertebrae in your back are wearing out. Degenerative disc disease can be mild or it can be severe.

As I discuss in this video, however, degenerative disc disease it not uncommon. Almost everyone will experience some level of disc degeneration as we get older. As such disability judges see references to “DDD” in almost every medical file they review.

Generally speaking a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease will not be enough to win Social Security disability benefits. But disc degeneration can be associated with more disabling conditions like herniated discs or spinal nerve root impingement.

Further, severe DDD can eliminate categories of jobs that require constant standing, walking or lifting. If you have other documented medical conditions that eliminate sitting and non-lifting jobs, taken together your disc issues and those other problems may be enough to convince a judge that you no longer have the capacity for any type of work.

Finally, if your doctor diagnoses degenerative disc disease (or degenerative joint disease, as it is sometimes known) but you are experiencing severe radiating pain, bowel or bladder dysfunction or weakness in your legs, that should prompt you to find out more - do you have one or more disc herniations or some other structural disc problem that needs more testing.
