Siu Lim Tau 小念頭

*Originally uploaded elsewhere July 15, 2019. This was our second real location, rent sharing with The Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship and Viñas Arnis. We were at this location between 2018 and 2021. 1829 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016. We changed the name again to more accurately reflect our M with a focus on classical Chinese, French, and English Boxing: Black Sun Boxing. This is where we started to get more serious about filming content.*

Wing Chun's first form, Siu Lim Tau.

小念頭 Properly Romanized "Siu Nim Tau" by both Yale and Jyutping standards. Often improperly Romanized Sil Lim Tau, Siu Lim Tao, and others.

While it is commonly translated as “little idea” the characters have a deeper meaning. Siu is plainly “small” or “little”, but nim is more than just “idea”. Nim is also “think of” or “study”. Tau means “first”, “top”, “head”, “chief” and indicates its place as the cornerstone of the system.

小Siu: small, tiny, insignificant
念Nim: think of, study
頭Tau: head, top, chief, first
