Terraria #5 - Attrition & Surrender

There are so many ways we could go right now and I have no idea which one is right. Do we continue exploring in the murderous underground caves? Should we be exploring the surface more for supplies? Maybe potion making will give us the edge we need? The only barrier to exploring the options ahead of us is the certain death every time we try to actually achieve them.
