Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson founder of the rap group The Roots is one of the hardest working drummer/producers in contemporary music today.
I instantly gravitated to his feel and groove on all of the Roots classics.
Ahmir is a big dude and he sits behind a small drum setup. Sometimes he'll use an 18 inch bass drum other times it's a 20 inch or maybe a 16 inch bass drum, 1or 2 snare drums, Hi Hat, Floor Tom and a large ride crash cymbal is all the man needs. My feeble attempt here is to emulate his sound as best to my ability . High and tight is how he tunes them and gets a full rich punching boom and crack .
