Portugals government approves lithium mining despite protests, concerns

Portugal’s government gave the lucrative mining industry permission to extract the metal in six different parts of the country despite widespread environmental concerns.

Europe’s dependence on outside sources for lithium comes amid growing demand partly fuelled by an auto industry scrambling to decarbonise.
