Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) - Game #7: Hex

Game #7 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a positional abstract strategy game invented by two mathematicians in the 1940s, Hex. The game is quite simple in concept, but involves a lot of strategy and calculation in practice. Two players take turns playing hexagonal pieces on the 11x11 rhombus playing field trying to make a complete path from one side to the other. One side tries to make a path from top to bottom, the other tries to make a path from left to right. The first player to completely connect their path wins the game. The game cannot end in a draw.

My first exposure to this game was on a game show called Blockbusters, which combined a miniature 4x5 rectangular Hex board with trivia. A solo player tried to connect a 4-piece path from top to bottom while a team of two tried to connect a 5-piece path from left to right. The first time I played the game myself was in a DOS puzzle game called The 11th Hour where one of the puzzles was playing a variation of Hex on a triangular playing field against the game's villain Henry Stauf where you had to connect all three sides of the triangle together before he did.

There are four skill levels of CPU players: Normal, Hard, Amazing, and Impossible, which must be beaten in order. Beat the Impossible CPU to achieve mastery of the game. Also, each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There is only one piece of trivia about Hex:

1. The name comes from the Greek prefix for "six", after the six-sided tiles.
