Sunday Longplay - Streets of Rage 4 (Switch) - Co-op with @GamesPerJustin (Hard, All Characters)

Together we're playing the recently-released Streets of Rage 4, released April 30 on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch, Streets of Rage was a series that my friend grew up with back in the Sega Genesis years, and I just love retro games in general, so this felt like a perfect game to play together. I didn't have the same experience with this franchise that he did since I was a Super Nintendo kid, but we did play through Streets of Rage 2 on his Genesis Mini before this, and I did enjoy it just the same even though I admittedly suck at beat-em-ups.

The game takes place 10 years after Streets of Rage 3, where Mr. X and his crime syndicate had been defeated and Wood Oak City endured a brief period of peace. But now, Mr. X's children, the Y Twins, have started a new crime syndicate to carry on their father's legacy, and have now concocted a master plan to brainwash the city using hypnotic music. After learning of their plot, series mainstay Blaze Fielding calls in some favors from some old friends: Axel Stone, Adam Hunter, Adam's daughter Cherry Hunter, and one of Dr. Zan's apprentices, Floyd Iraia.

There are also 12 unlockable characters, consisting of the entire rosters from the first three Streets of Rage games (except for Roo because he's a bartender now, and Ash from Bare Knuckle 3 for weird but understandable reasons). In order to unlock them, all you have to do is fill up the score bar. After each level, your final score is added to your lifetime total, and once that lifetime total reaches a certain amount, you will unlock the next character. until you unlock the final character which is SOR3 Shiva. In this playthrough, we're bringing everyone, all 17 characters, into the fight!

There are also four hidden retro levels scattered throughout the game, more specifically in levels 2, 4, 5, and 8. In order to access them, you have to find a Bare Knuckle (which is the Streets of Rage series's name in Japan) arcade machine and zap it with a taser. In this video, we're covering all four of the retro bosses as well!

We probably could do this on Hardest difficulty if we stayed with our best characters for the whole game, but for the sake of showing everyone in action, including unfamiliar characters, and also because Normal mode is just too easy, we decided to do this on Hard mode. I may do my own Hardest solo playthrough sometime in the future.
