05/26/2020 - The BOP has 136,959 federal inmates in BOP-managed institutions and 12,106 in community-based facilities. The BOP staff complement is approximately 36,000. There are 1577 federal inmates and 181 BOP staff who have confirmed positive test results for COVID-19 nationwide. Currently, 3180 inmates and 413 staff have recovered. There have been 64 federal inmate deaths and 0 BOP staff member deaths attributed to COVID-19 disease.

Weekly visits from family & walking the track with friends might just be a thing of the past. When people would ask me about how my time was spent in federal prison most were surprised with my answer. I was not confined to a cell or a room, I did not go days or weeks without showers or seeing other people. I was able to spend hours per day out on a very nice rec yard with softball fields, football fields, tennis, volleyball, Racquetball, and much more. We even had very nice fitness rooms where intense training was held. We had a billard room with several pool tables with a music room off to the side. Sounds pretty good right? Well it was. It was actually pretty awesome if I am, to be honest. COVID- 19 has changed everything to what I think will be a permanent situation.

The fear of individuals getting sick both inmate, as well as staff, has created a new day to day in federal prison. Group sports are dead. Workout classes are dead. long hours on the rec yard are dead. Passing time in the federal prison system just became increasingly more difficult. Even once COVID- 19 becomes under control the aftermath will linger for possible years to come.
