Mike Modawell – D Co, 165th Military Intelligence BN

Mike Modawell served with Delta Company of the 165th Military Intelligence Battalion. Mike arrived mid-1995 to a company in flux. The traditional stractical (strategic and tactical blended portmanteau) counterintelligence mission was changing. Interrogators were going away, at least from Germany. Also, counterintelligence agents assigned in Germany were going to focus on strategic missions. It appeared for a time that intelligence units wouldn't deploy with a Russian focus as before.

Mike and D Co, 165th, did actually deploy. By January of 1996 the unit was on the ground and working for a variety of units as part of the IFOR mission to guarantee the Dayton Peace Accords. So, what does a deployed counterintelligence agent do? They get out and work. They look for bad people, they ask questions and they make a difference in a conflict that was led by not by infantry or tanks, but by spies.
