Sunday Longplay - Doom: Deathless (Switch Add-On) - Episode 1: Lifeless (UV-Max)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm taking a break from No End In Sight while I struggle to memorize all 20 secrets in the penultimate level of episode 3, and starting another classic Doom add-on that was released to consoles last week. Welcome to Deathless, a full 4-episode speed-mapping project by James Paddock (also known for making the midi soundtrack for John Romero's Sigil) that he completed in only 9 days! Speed-mapping results can be pretty hit-and-miss, but this set of maps feels like a total hit. Like Ultimate Doom and No End In Sight, this wad is divided into 4 separate episodes, so let's begin with Episode 1: Lifeless!

Just like with the previous episodes, I will be going for 100% kills and secrets on Ultra-Violence difficulty. Thanks to the smaller maps, there aren't that many secrets, but there are still plenty of enemies to kill especially in E1M7. It's also worth noting that episode 1 on consoles has a few extra secrets compared to the PC version. E1M1 only had 2 secrets on PC, but here it has 4. The ledge with the imp on top just beyond the entrance door now has a box of bullets on it which you can get by strafe-running off the top of the elevator, and there's a fake wall you can open to the right of where you drop down after riding said elevator that will lead you to some shells.

Episode 1 was a nice breather after playing some of the tougher levels from No End In Sight (which I will get back to soon). Also of note is the secret level, which is basically a Doom 1-style recreation of a Doom 2 map (more specifically map 20: Gotcha!). All of the secret levels do this, by the way. The secret exit in episode 1 can be found in E1M3: Sluice Gate.
