Gazprom says it cannot guarantee safe operation of Nord Stream 1. Gas 3 times as expensive
1. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that it was a “very difficult decision” to grant an exemption from sanctions imposed on Russia for the return of a repaired turbine needed for Nord Stream 1.
The sanctions are “aimed at [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and his enablers and aren’t designed to harm our allies and their populations,” Trudeau said, adding that Ottawa would continue to “unequivocally” stand with Ukraine.

2. A group representing the Ukrainian diaspora said on Tuesday it was seeking a judicial review of the Canadian government’s decision to issue a “time-limited and revocable permit” to exempt the return of turbines from its Russian sanctions.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Wednesday Kyiv had told Berlin and Ottawa that returning the turbine was a “mistake”.

3. Energy giant Gazprom said on Wednesday (13 July) it could not guarantee the safe operation of a critical part of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline because of doubt over the return of a turbine from Canada.
Ottawa at the weekend said it had issued a permit to allow the return of the turbine needed for Nord Stream 1’s Portovaya compressor station in Russia.
Reportedly, under the compromise, the turbine would be sent to Germany first, so Canada does not breach any sanctions. Then Germany will deliver the turbine to Russia.

4. Germany’s energy regulator estimates that consumers in the country are likely to see their monthly heating bills triple next year due to dwindling Russian gas imports.
“For those now receiving their heating bill, the payments are already doubling – and that is before taking into account the Ukraine war,” Klaus Muller, head of the Federal Network Agency, told news outlet RNDáon.
“From 2023, customers must prepare for bills to at least triple,” he said, adding that market prices were increasing sevenfold in some cases.
