When a child sins and you discipline him for that sin, you're teaching the child there is punishment when you do wrong. Though a parent cannot save any child, they can prepare the child's heart for a future encounter with God when they recognize their immediate and eternal need to receive God's forgiveness. The parent that does not discipline their child is communicating at least these nine messages at once: 1. Sin is not real. 2. Sin is not a big deal. 3. Sin will not continue in your life. 4. Sin will not desensitize you to the truth. 5. There is no better way to live your life. 6. "I do not love you" because I will not discipline you. 7. It's okay to manipulate people to get the desires of your heart. 8. Getting your way, always thinking about yourself is true success. 9. There is a way that seems right to you, and that is the right path. Parental discipline is an obedience issue for the parent: If you do not discipline your child biblically, you're not obeying God. When you administer appropriate discipline, you're highlighting the child's need for Christ, pointing them to a more extraordinary accomplishment that can set their souls free.

An unguarded strength is a double weakness because we rarely guard our strengths because we think of them as good, not realizing that our abilities can entrap us, keeping us from relying on God. Let me illustrate my point with a counseling session with a mother and daughter. The child’s strength was her intellect, propelling her to do well in school. The unguardedness of her skills created a darkness in the child’s life that brought them to counseling. If we are not wise in stewarding our strengths, we can become blind, too. Typically, when people think about modesty, their minds immediately go to what a person wears and arbitrary preferences rather than the heart’s motivations that influence our external choices. Perhaps when I mentioned “modesty,” your impulse was similar: “Great, he will tell us what to wear!” If so, you’re normal. But my goal here is different. When a child sins there must be appropriate discipline. The parent is teaching consequences for actions. The parent lets the child know there is a price to pay for wrongs—the point and purpose of the gospel. We’re seeing the multi-generational effect of parents who did not practice gospel-informed discipline. We have millions of adults who reject consequences and are hostile to common-sense admonitions. Divorce is the worse thing that can happen in a marriage because it never ends. Death is final, but divorce has another life. And in that life, the ex-spouse can continue to complicate matters. In most of these situations, the problems have something to do with the children. I’m going to address a biblical response to this challenge when the marriage is over but the kids need parents. The angry heart does not have to direct its frustration toward anyone to complicate that relationship. All the angry person has to do is stand in the vicinity of those who receive the spillover of their anger. Whether you’re mad at someone or intoxicating the room with your frustration, it will damage your redemptive goals with the casualties. Few things are more frightening to a child than an angry dad. An angry father in the home is the metaphorical equivalent of rolling a child’s heart through a minefield. The angry dad forces the child to live between two worlds: strive to be perfect or receive the father’s exasperating disapproval. The accumulative effect of that kind of torment is hard to overcome. When children are young, they believe their parents are impressive in about every way. As they grow older and create proper categories for living well with others, they begin to see their parents’ good and bad behaviors. Observing flawed lives in the family dynamic does not have to be harmful to the children if the parents consistently clean up their messes by active repentance. However, suppose the husband and wife are not modeling a practical picture of Christ and His church while repenting along the way. In that case, it can have a detrimental impact on their children, even pushing them away from the family and Christ.
