Private Libertarian Paramilitary Groups Patrolling Portland?

A listener calls in to discuss how paramilitary groups are patrolling the streets in Portland's nightlife scene. After the protests in 2020, funds in the city were reallocated from the police to aid in the efforts to combat homelessness. But local business owners have decided to hire these groups to patrol the streets in their area instead.

A while ago you had another caller I think on a Thursday call in and talk about sort of the libertarian haven that has sort of sprung up in the downtown portland kind of nightlife area. I don't remember this but go on. sure so for context as part of a large amount of kind of George Floyd protests in the from the police related protests that happened in portland some of the city council members sorts of I don't want to say gave in but answered some of the demands and concerns from the protesters by actually reallocating money away from the portland police. and as a result, some of the patrols in the nightlife area in downtown Portland were significantly reduced. and in response to that, a coalition of bar and nightclub owners started hiring their own paramilitary private security groups. oh god. to start patrolling the streets to replace these Portland police patrols that had been taken away. and there was a really good article put out by I believe Willamette week about it. where they literally quoted one of these paramilitary guys after being asked why they had gone into security rather than actually joining the portland police he said I'd rather die with my boots on than get old and die in a retirement home with my pension.
