Is Europe on the Verge of Catastrophe?

Earlier today, Reuters reported Russian energy giant Gazprom declared force majeure on its German energy contracts and will halt natural gas deliveries to Germany "indefinitely." If this is true, and the gas flows stop, what will this mean for Germany? Europe? The entire global economy? I believe the implications will be severe for every man, woman, and child on the face of the planet.
