Controlling 12V LED Patio Lights with a Z-Wave Switch

After picking up this Z-Wave switch by mistake for the AC diversion load project, I decided it could be used to control the 12V LED lights in the back yard patio.

Using a Class 2 power supply as the low-voltage interface made swapping out a regular toggle switch for a Z-Wave controlled switch trivial. Easy installation with the dual purpose line/load terminals on the switch. Connect one black wire to each black screw and the neutral to the other side. No changes on 12V DC side were needed.

Another solution for this would have been to install a light switch out in the patio area. However, this would be complicated and likely expensive. This circuit has no ground wire thanks to the 1950's wiring codes. So an exterior switch would likely need to be grounded and on a GFCI protected circuit and brought up to modern codes with the required permit. Using the Z-Wave switch avoids that whole mess by leaving the original wiring intact.
