#GVOS2020 - Maxillaria variabils

A couple of years back, I stumbled across this Maxillaria variabilis in our local garden center. It was out of bloom, so reduced price sticker... I had never seen anything other than the Cambria & Phalaenopsis hybrids, as my area is not so adventurous on the orchid availability front. In 2 years, it has tripled in size. This footage is from February 2019, and it is now in bloom again (March 2020) with hundreds of these beautiful yellow blooms, however, it suffered some hail damage, as it lives outside all year round. The foliage handled the onslaught pretty well, but shows specks of damage, so I opted for the footage of last year to showcase it. (apologies for the rough camera action, it was my first time filming).

Some are fragrant, mine is not. It is in a XL #Orchitop with a mix of seramis, lava rock and leca. It is a very thirsty and hungry orchid, and I spray it from above, as well as fill the tray with water whenever it is empty. It tolerates temperatures down to 5ºC and full sun in our hot summer months, but it then needs to be sprayed frequently, or placed in bright shade.
