Zimbabwe's Mermaid & Fae Problem

► Now I know what you’re thinking… Mermaids? What on Earth are you talking about? Well a few months ago in April I reported on the disappearance of Zayd Dada from Mount Nyangani in Zimbabwe. During my reporting of that incident, an unrelated but interesting topic came up. I’m not making this up, the belief in Mermaids in the region is taken seriously, so much so that it has real and noteworthy consequences.

In early February of 2012, the Water Resources Minister, Sam Sipepa Nkomo, in a committee had to explain why work on multiple dam sites had stopped. The government workers at the dam sites of Mutare, Manicaland, Gokwe and Midlands had all reported being hounded by things in the water. The workers at the time were updating their water pumps and installing new ones, but they began to report unusual experiences. These things in the water, they believed, were mermaids, or rather water spirits. What’s interesting is that some of these workers had become terrified of being at the dam sites and all workers present vowed that they wouldn’t return unless the mermaids were appeased.
