Stanley Pierre-Louis, President and CEO of Entertainment Software Association gave us three positive effects video games can have on a child’s cognitive development.

According to Pierre-Louis, kids who play games are inspired to learn more about the science behind them. So much so that girls who play video games are three times as likely to get a college degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

Video games are also being used in an educational context more frequently, with games such as Minecraft creating an educational version that helps kids understand computational thinking.

In 2019, the World Health Organization classified gaming disorder as a new disease, suffered by people who struggle to control how much time they spend playing.

Peirre-Louis contests that it’s a misconception that kids are wasting their time while playing video games, instead they are actually building a variety of skills while playing. Skills including perseverance and empathy.
