A $10 billion railway line called Tren Maya is being built across the Yucatan Peninsula and through the five southern states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo. Eventually, 29 stations connect major tourism sites, beaches, and hotels along the 948-mile rail line, which is built in seven sections in two phases. Due to its impacts on jungles, natural areas, and historic-cultural sites, the project is extremely controversial.
