What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots)?
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a temporary change in colour of skin that happens after inflamed acne has recently healed.

What are the types of colour changes seen after acne?
Postinflammatory erythema – pink or purple flat patches

Who gets post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?
It can occur in anyone but is more common in darker-skinned individuals, in whom the colour tends to be more intense and persist for a longer period than in lighter skin colours.

What causes the colour change?
When the skin gets inflamed from acne, immune cells are released into the skin layers that are trying to heal the acne. Unfortunately, these trigger more skin pigment (melanin) to be released, which goes into the surrounding skin cells (Keratinocytes) and makes the skin change colour.
