Built in 1520 by the mighty Rory Mor O'Shaughnessy (descendent of King Guaire) on the site of the palace of the legendary King Guaire’s palace. Dunguaire Castle has witnessed sieges, warring clans and renowned literary figures. Dunguaire Castle resides alongside an inlet of Galway Bay just north of the village of Kinvara in western Ireland.

Dunguaire castle has a starring role in the 1969 Disney movie called Guns in the Heather. It went by the name of Boyne Castle in the footage. Dunguaire also starred as a Scottish castle in the 1979 movie, North Sea Hijack.
