The Galilee guide. If you’re planning a vacation to Israel, the Galilee will probably form part of your itinerary.

Until I’ve completed my post about the Galilee, here is a summary of what was discussed:

Main sites:

Akko (also written Acre) - a small city on the shore of the Mediterranean. It is a city of two historical layers: the underground Crusader city and the Ottoman city we see today.

Rosh HaNikra - at the northernmost point of the Israeli coastline is the closed border with Lebanon. Here you can visit the grottoes (not mentioned in the video).

Nazareth - the largest Arab city in Israel. Numerous churches, the most important of which is of course the Basilica of the Annunciation.

Tiberias - lies on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The city itself could be more appealing, but it makes for a good base for trips around the Sea of Galilee.

Main national parks:
HaHula - Israel is a paradise for birdwatchers, with half a billion birds migrating through Israel twice every year (in spring and in autumn).

Mount Meron - standing at 1208 meters tall, the highest mountain in the Galilee is a great place to hike.
Dan National Park - one of the streams feeding the Jordan River.
Banias National Park (also known as Caesarea Philippi).

Mount Tabor

Jewish sites:

Safed (in Hebrew we say ‘Tzfat’) - a city that became the center of Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism, in the 16th century.

There are a lot of synagogues as the Galilee became a center of Jewish life after the destruction of the Judea area in the Great Revolt and the Bar Kokhba Revolt.

Zionist sites:
Kineret and Degania - birthplace of the kibbutz movement.

Rosh Pina, Metula, Tel Hai, Kfar Giladi - the first Jewish settlements in the Galilee.

Christian sites:

Cana - near Nazareth, where Jesus performed his first miracle by turning water into wine.

Transportation:
It isn’t easy to reach parks and small villages outside the cities by means of public transportation. You can rent a car in Tel Aviv (which is also a good option if you want to visit Caesarea). In the Galilee you can rent a car in Haifa or Tiberias.
