Hundreds of supporters of Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr broke into Iraq's parliament on Wednesday as the country reached 290 days without a sitting government.
Infighting between Shi'ite and Kurdish groups has partly caused the delay, preventing passage of a 2022 budget that would determine economic reform and support infrastructure spending. The last long deadlock was in 2010.
After 289 days, former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki got a second term.
The outgoing government of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi continues to run the country and he may stay on as caretaker until elections can be held once again.
